The simplest method is to move pots into a more sheltered spot when strong winds are expected. A corner near a wall, under a balcony, or beside a sturdy railing breaks the force of the wind. Grouping pots together also helps; they support each other and create a mini windbreak.
For plants that must stay in one place, you can tie taller stems gently to stakes using soft ties, so they don’t snap. Avoid tight knots that cut into the stem. In very windy areas, low, heavy pots are better than tall, light ones that topple easily.
If you have the space, lightweight portable screens or even an old piece of lattice or bamboo mat can act as a temporary barrier. Just be sure they’re secured so they don’t blow over onto the plants.
The goal isn’t to remove all movement – a little sway actually strengthens stems – but to stop violent whipping that breaks branches and dries out soil rapidly.
