Do overhanging trees increase the risk of roof damage?

Yes, trees hanging directly over a roof can cause several problems. Branches that touch or scrape shingles in the wind slowly wear them down, loosening granules and even breaking pieces over time. In storms, larger branches may snap and fall, causing direct physical damage.

Leaves and twigs falling onto the roof clog gutters and valleys. When water can’t drain properly, it pools, seeps under shingles and leads to leaks or rot. Shade from thick branches can also keep areas damp, encouraging moss and algae growth that further degrades materials.

This doesn’t mean you must cut every tree. Trees provide shade, beauty and cooler surroundings. But regular trimming to keep branches a safe distance from the roof, plus frequent gutter cleaning in leafy seasons, is important.

Think of it as managing a relationship: you want the benefits of trees without letting them sit on your roof like unwanted guests.
