Should you dust or vacuum first when cleaning a room?

Always dust first, vacuum later. When you wipe or dust surfaces – shelves, tables, window sills, electronics – some of that dust becomes airborne and then settles on the floor. If you vacuum first, you’ll just have to redo the floor again after dusting.

    A simple sequence works best:

    1. Declutter quickly so surfaces are visible.
    2. Dust from top to bottom – ceiling corners, fans, shelves, then tables.
    3. Wipe sticky spots as you go.
    4. Finish with vacuuming or sweeping the floor, and mopping if needed.

Working top-down saves time and effort. Fans and high shelves are often the worst culprits; once you clean those, everything below stays cleaner for longer. Using a slightly damp cloth instead of a completely dry one also helps trap dust instead of just pushing it around.

So yes, dust first, then vacuum. It’s a small change, but once you get into that habit, your cleaning sessions feel more efficient and rooms actually look properly done when you’re finished.
