It sounds a bit nerdy, but yes, a simple log helps more than you’d expect. It doesn’t need to be a fancy system. One page in a notebook, a note on your phone, or a basic spreadsheet is enough. Write down the date, what you did, who did it, and any cost worth remembering.
For example: “April 2025 – AC serviced, gas topped up,” or “Nov 2025 – Bathroom waterproofing done, 5-year warranty.” Months later, when something acts up, you won’t be guessing, “When did we last fix this?” You’ll know.
It also shows patterns. If the same thing breaks repeatedly, maybe the underlying issue wasn’t solved, or the part quality is poor. If you ever sell or rent the house, showing a potential buyer or tenant that you’ve maintained things regularly creates trust.
Most importantly, a log nudges you to actually follow through. When you see blank months, you’re reminded, “Okay, time to book that service.” It’s a small habit with long-term payoff.
