How often should you check your home for signs of termites?

A quick once-a-year termite check is a good minimum, and in areas known for termite activity, twice a year is even better. Termites work slowly and quietly. By the time obvious damage appears, they’ve often been feasting for months.

You don’t need professional tools for a basic inspection. Look at wooden door frames, window frames, skirting, built-in wardrobes and furniture that touches walls. Tap gently and listen for hollow sounds. Check for mud tubes running up walls or across flooring, tiny piles of what looks like sand or pepper near wood, and any bubbling or distorted paint.

Pay extra attention to areas near bathrooms, kitchens and damp corners. Termites love moisture. If you’ve had an infestation before, keep an even closer eye on those spots and follow up with any recommended preventive treatments.

Catching them early means a local treatment instead of a full-house battle. Once a year, set aside an hour to walk around with this specific purpose. It’s not exciting, but it can save you a lot of money and stress.
