How often should metal roofs be checked for rust?

Metal roofs are durable, but rust is their enemy. A basic inspection once a year is usually enough in normal conditions, with extra checks after severe storms or if you live very close to the sea, where salt speeds up corrosion.

From the ground or a safe vantage point, look for discoloured patches, flaking paint, or reddish-brown spots where the coating has worn away. Pay extra attention to screw heads, seams, and cut edges – rust often starts there first.

Inside, keep an eye out for leaks or damp spots beneath metal sections; sometimes rust has already opened tiny holes. Catching rust early means you can clean the area, apply rust treatment and repaint, rather than replacing full panels later.

If you’re nervous about climbing or walking on the roof, let a professional handle it. The key is not to ignore early, small signs; they’re the easiest and cheapest to fix.
