How many main light sources should a living room have?

A good living room usually has at least three layers of light:

    1. General lighting – a ceiling light or downlights that brighten the whole space.
    2. Task lighting – lamps near reading chairs, desks, or a floor lamp beside the sofa.
    3. Accent lighting – wall lights, cabinet lights, or small lamps that create mood.

You don’t need all of them on at once. The idea is to have options. Bright general light is great for cleaning, kids playing or big gatherings. Softer lamps are better for watching TV or relaxing. Accent lights add warmth in the evening without making the room feel like an office.Even in a small living room, try to have at least two different light sources you can switch between: for example, ceiling light plus one lamp. This flexibility makes the room feel more comfortable and lived-in throughout the day.
