What simple maintenance tool should every homeowner own?

If you had to pick just one, I’d say a good-quality, basic tool kit with a screwdriver set, pliers and a hammer, but if we’re being very specific: a sturdy multi-bit screwdriver might be the single most used tool in a normal home.

So many small tasks depend on it – tightening loose handles, opening appliance panels, adjusting hinges, assembling furniture, fixing kids’ toys, changing switch plates. Without a screwdriver, every tiny job becomes a call to someone else.

Ideally, keep a small toolbox that also includes: a tape measure, adjustable spanner, a few wall plugs and screws, insulating tape and a basic torch. Nothing fancy, just reliable pieces.

The point isn’t to turn yourself into a full-time handyman, but to handle everyday issues without drama. When a cabinet screw falls out or a door handle loosens at 10 pm, having that simple tool ready feels like a superpower.
