What documents should you always keep from a renovation project?

Renovations may end, but paperwork stays important. You should always keep detailed bills, warranties, drawings and communication records. Bills from contractors, electricians, plumbers, carpenters and material suppliers are useful not just for tax or accounting, but also when something fails. If a fitting or appliance breaks under warranty, the original bill is often required.

Any layout drawings, electrical plans or plumbing routes you receive are gold. Store them safely, both physically and as photos or scans. They help you (or future owners) avoid drilling into wires or pipes, and make future work smoother.

Warranties for waterproofing, paint, appliances, fittings and tiles should be kept together in one file or digital folder. Note down the start date, duration and any conditions.

Also, keep important WhatsApp/email conversations where you finalised big decisions – for example, “Use XYZ brand tiles in bathroom,” or “Change window size to this.” They act as reference if there’s confusion later about what was agreed.

In short, treat your renovation like a mini project. Once the dust settles, a neatly organised folder of documents saves you from memory fights and guesswork in the years to come.
